Upgrading Connectivity along the Himatnagar–Talod–Ujediya Corridor

This project focused on the widening and strengthening of the Himatnagar–Talod–Ujediya Road (State Highway 237) between Km 8/00 and Km 30/800, including the construction of a major bridge under the Central Road Fund (CRF) 2016–17 scheme.

With a project completion cost of ₹9.19 crore, the work aimed to enhance road safety, load capacity, and traffic flow along this key intra-district route connecting major towns in North Gujarat.

Scope and Nature of Work

The project involved widening and strengthening the existing carriageway to handle higher traffic loads and improve riding quality. A major reinforced concrete bridge was also constructed to replace the old crossing and ensure safe and uninterrupted movement, particularly during the monsoon.

Along with this, road geometrics, shoulders, and drainage systems were upgraded to improve safety and surface performance. These works together enabled an all-weather, reliable transport corridor for both passenger and goods movement.

Engineering Design and Quality Implementation

Executed under the supervision of the Public Works Department (PWD), Gujarat, the project adhered to IRC and MORTH standards for highway and bridge construction.

The strengthening works involved granular sub-base renewal, bituminous macadam overlay, and dense bituminous concrete surfacing to improve pavement life.

The major bridge construction included deep foundations, RCC superstructure, and crash barriers, ensuring load-bearing reliability and long-term structural integrity.

Outcome and Regional Impact

Completed at a cost of ₹9.19 crore, the project delivered a strengthened and widened 22.8 km road section with an upgraded bridge, improving travel safety, road capacity, and connectivity between Himatnagar, Talod, and adjoining regions. The improved corridor has enhanced economic linkages, reduced travel time, and provided a more resilient infrastructure backbone supporting regional development in Sabarkantha district.

Execution Challenges and Project Management

The project team navigated challenges including heavy monsoon cycles, traffic management during construction, and soil variability near the bridge approach zones.

Through careful sequencing, local resource optimization, and on-site supervision, the team maintained steady progress and high construction quality, minimizing disruptions to local commuters and transport services.
