Upgrading Critical Border Link Infrastructure in Gujarat

This project involved the upgradation and strengthening of the link road from Dharamshala to Vigokote in the Gujarat Sector along India’s western border.

The work covered the section from RD 0.0 km to RD 42.0 km (except RD 3 to 9 km) and was executed under the supervision of the Central Public Works Department (CPWD).

Implemented as per the 2007 recommendations of the Central Road Research Institute (CRRI), the project focused on improving flood-prone and deteriorated stretches of this vital border link road. With a completion cost of ₹8.71 crore, the work significantly improved connectivity for Border Security Force (BSF) units and logistics movement in this strategic zone.

Scope and Nature of Work

The project involved upgrading and strengthening the existing border link road to meet operational and structural standards for defense mobility. The work included widening and regrading the road formation from RD 0.0 km to RD 42.0 km (excluding RD 3–9 km), strengthening the subgrade and pavement layers with granular and bituminous materials, improving surface drainage through reconstruction of cross-drainage structures and side drains, and reinforcing shoulders with slope protection for long-term stability. These upgrades enhanced load-bearing capacity, flood resilience, and ensured reliable year-round accessibility for BSF operations.

Engineering Execution and Quality Compliance

The project was carried out under the technical supervision of CPWD engineers, following MORTH and IRC specifications.

Engineering emphasis was placed on achieving high compaction density, ensuring proper camber and grade control, and maintaining uniform thickness across strengthened layers.

All materials, including aggregates, bitumen, and granular mixes, were tested in accordance with CRRI-recommended specifications to ensure long-term durability and performance in saline and flood-affected terrains of the Gujarat border region.

Completion and Strategic Importance

Completed at a total cost of ₹8.71 crore, the project successfully delivered an upgraded and strengthened link road between Dharamshala and Vigokote, significantly improving the reliability of transportation in this sensitive border stretch. The improved alignment has enhanced the mobility and logistical efficiency of BSF units, ensuring faster deployment, improved accessibility, and reduced maintenance needs in the long term. This upgradation project stands as a key milestone in the modernization of Gujarat’s border road network, aligning with CRRI’s long-term flood management and durability recommendations.

Overcoming Terrain and Execution Challenges

The Dharamshala–Vigokote corridor passes through semi-arid zones and low-lying areas prone to seasonal waterlogging. The project team managed these conditions by employing a phased approach that aligned construction schedules with seasonal variations.

Restricted access, logistical challenges, and fluctuating subsoil moisture levels were addressed through continuous coordination with BSF authorities and the use of specialized construction equipment suited for border terrain.

This ensured timely completion without disrupting ongoing defense operations in the region.
