Enhancing Connectivity through Bridge Construction at Khari River

This project involved the construction of a major bridge across the Khari River at Kodaki village in Taluka Bhuj, Kutch District, Gujarat.

The work was undertaken to establish a reliable crossing point for rural and regional traffic, replacing an unsafe seasonal route affected by monsoon flooding.

With a project completion cost of ₹3.18 crore, the bridge provides year-round connectivity for local communities and facilitates access to markets, schools, and essential services.

Scope and Nature of Work

The project involved the construction of an RCC bridge across the Khari River with a suitable span configuration to ensure structural stability and uninterrupted crossing. Approach roads and embankments were developed on both sides to provide a smooth vehicular transition to and from the bridge.

Protective measures such as wing walls, retaining structures, and river training works were also included to safeguard against erosion and seasonal flow impacts. The bridge design was planned considering hydraulic conditions, soil characteristics, and flood behaviour of the river basin.

Engineering Design and Quality Execution

Executed under the supervision of the Public Works Department (PWD), Gujarat, the project adhered to IRC and MORTH specifications for bridge design and construction.

The structure included reinforced concrete piers, abutments, and deck slabs, supported by deep foundations suitable for riverbed stability.

All construction materials—cement, aggregates, and reinforcement steel—were tested and approved as per BIS standards, ensuring long-term performance and safety.

Outcome and Impact

Completed at a total cost of ₹3.18 crore, the Khari River Bridge at Kodaki now provides permanent, all-weather connectivity for local residents and transport services. The new structure has improved accessibility, reduced travel time, and strengthened the regional road network in Kutch District. This bridge stands as a key step toward enhancing rural mobility, flood resilience, and infrastructure reliability in western Gujarat.

Challenges and Project Implementation

The site’s riverine terrain and seasonal water levels posed challenges during foundation and substructure work.

The project team planned execution around dry-season windows, optimizing material transport and equipment movement in rural terrain. Strict safety protocols and staged execution ensured steady progress without affecting local access routes.
