Construction of bridge over Tarna River, Bobiya

Bridge & Culvert Construction
Indo–Pak Border, Jammu Sector, India
Completed

Strengthening Border Connectivity through River-Crossing Infrastructure

The project involved the construction of a bridge over the Tarna River near Bobiya, undertaken as part of a broader initiative to construct bridges and culverts across rivers and nallahs along the Indo–Pak Border in the Jammu Sector.

With a project completion cost of ₹14.30 crore, this work aimed to provide uninterrupted road connectivity for Border Security Force (BSF) movement and logistics across flood-prone zones, ensuring year-round operational access along critical stretches of the international border.

Scope and Nature of Work

The project involved constructing a reinforced concrete bridge across the Tarna River to replace vulnerable causeways and temporary crossings. The scope included RCC substructure and superstructure works designed to carry heavy vehicular loads.

River training measures, approach road development, and protective works for scour and erosion control were also carried out to ensure long-term stability. The bridge was designed to meet defence mobility requirements and support BSF and military movement in all weather conditions.

Engineering Execution and Quality Assurance

The project was executed under the supervision of the Central Public Works Department (CPWD) with coordination from Border Security Force (BSF) authorities to meet operational and structural standards required for defence infrastructure.

High-grade concrete and reinforcement materials were used, conforming to MORTH and IRC specifications. Regular site inspections, load tests, and material verifications were conducted to ensure the bridge met strength, stability, and serviceability criteria.

Outcome and Strategic Significance

Completed at a total cost of ₹14.30 crore, the bridge over the Tarna River near Bobiya now provides reliable and flood-resilient connectivity along the Indo–Pak Border in Jammu. The new structure ensures uninterrupted BSF patrol movement, facilitates troop mobility, and enhances logistical efficiency in the region’s defence operations. This project stands as an important contribution to strengthening India’s western border infrastructure, improving both security readiness and connectivity across river-crossed stretches in the Jammu Sector.

Navigating Terrain and Riverine Challenges

Construction over the Tarna River presented challenges due to variable river flow, soft alluvial soil, and restricted work conditions near the international border.

Despite logistical constraints and security-sensitive working zones, the project team maintained progress through efficient planning, staged construction, and close coordination with local and defence authorities to ensure safety and continuity throughout the work period.
